Sheltered in a Phone Box - Exhibition

  • RE-Box Phone Box Lind Hill Ryde, England, PO33 2LD United Kingdom (map)

On every day during the festival. An exciting collaborative project between local artists Alice Malia and Laura Hathaway, ‘Sheltered’ will see the 14 neglected shelters along Appley Beach in Ryde transformed over the course of this Summer.

Inspired by key local marine species such as the Compass Jellyfish and the Long Snouted Seahorse, large-scale marine-themed murals will appear on each shelter, celebrating the unique and vital species that inhabit our local seagrass beds, gravel banks and shell reefs.

The Re:Box installation will show some of the work in progress for this project, giving us an exciting insight into this imminent transformation of Ryde’s seafront.

About Re:Box

Re:Box is the Isle of Wight's smallest art gallery sited in a classic Kiosk No.6 red phone box on Lind Street in Ryde.

Through BT's 'Adopt a Kiosk' initiative, Ryde Town Council purchased the box for £1 and turned it over to 'Ryde Exhibitionists' - a pair of local creatives determined to give this decommissioned piece of street furniture a new lease of life.

Since August 2022, writer Anmarie Bowler and photographer Zoe Barker have worked with Island artists and community groups to create a series of ever-changing and surprising installations.

Lit from the inside, when night falls Re:Box transforms into a lightbox that creates the magical impression of glowing stained glass.
