Translating Frequencies at Calbourne Church

  • Calbourne Church Newport, England, PO30 4JE United Kingdom (map)

Translating Frequencies: 639 is a site-specific immersive sound installation by artist Nathan Holt, presented as part of his Falmouth MA Fine Art (Online) Final Major Project.

Hosted at All Saints Church, Calbourne, a 12th-century site of architectural and cultural heritage, the installation transforms the chancel into a space for tactile sound experience, where visitors are invited to engage in deep listening within the fabric of the building itself.

Developed through an intensive field recording process, the work incorporates acoustic and subsonic sounds captured within the church and its surrounding natural environment, composed around the harmonic frame work of 639Hz.

The installation explores the way sound resonates within historical architecture, inviting participants to attune to the heard and the unheard, and experience listening as an embodied and spatially aware act.
