Join us for a fun and fascinating day by the sea at the iconic Ryde Pier seafront by the Wightlink terminal. As part of the Isle of Wight Biosphere Festival 2025, the University of Portsmouth’s expert marine scientists, and the Revolution Plastics Institute are hosting a hands-on, family-friendly event to learn about our amazing coastal environment and local conservation efforts.
Seagrass Survey 10am - 2pm
Grab your wellies and head to the beach to join our seagrass survey. You’ll explore one of the UK’s largest seagrass meadows and discover how this underwater habitat helps protect our coastlines, stores carbon, and provides a home for all sorts of wildlife — from fish and tiny crabs, to seahorses and endangered species.
Microplastics detectives 10am - 2pm
Prefer to stay dry? Join our informative talks and practical demos about plastic pollution. You’ll get the chance to take part in a microplastics survey on Ryde beach to see and learn how plastics enter marine habitats, the damage they cause, and what we can do to combat the plastics crisis.
Beach Clean 2pm - 3pm
Following the workshops, we’ll roll up our sleeves for a big community beach clean. Help us collect and sort rubbish found along the beach, contribute valuable scientific data for research, and help make Ryde beach a cleaner, safer place for everyone to enjoy. All equipment will be provided, just bring your enthusiasm and a drink to keep you hydrated — preferably in a reusable water bottle!
